For Students

Students at Kingston University are encouraged to think about sustainability issues throughout their studies.  This has the effect of making sure they are ready to join the workplace with a firm understanding and deeper learning about sustainability issues.

Many of the academic staff at Kingston University are research-active which means that students gain access to ‘live’ research throughout their studies, which can have a positive knock-on effect through their studies and also for learning about where they might like to work upon graduation.

Through the course of studies, students take part in visits around the UK and abroad which harness the knowledge of locals and academics involved in the visits.  These trips are memorable and often cited by students as one of the highlights of studying at Kingston.  For example, students from the School of Surveying have recently taken part in a residential visit to Cardiff.  The subject-based activities focused on the growth of a city over the centuries and aspirations for the development of Cardiff Bay within the historical and future contexts of the city.  ‘Lectures’ were delivered on city-wide bus trips and guided museum tours helped give an understanding of the sustainability issues of the city.

Another example is that postgraduate students have visited the Greenwich Millennium Village as potential owner/occupiers, assuming different roles. For example, posing as a young professional couple, a young family and an elderly couple.  The aim of this trip was to match needs with the sustainability credentials of the Greenwich Millennium Village, giving students the chance to think about sustainability from different viewpoints.  The visit was recorded visually and formed part of an exhibition at C-SCAIPE.
